At Kentish Town Primary School, we believe that Black history is not something to be explored for one month alone, it is an important and valued part of our curriculum all year round.

This year, as part of our ongoing work, we focused on the stories of iconic Black individuals who have ‘Stood firm in their Power and Pride’. Those who have faced racism and injustice with strength, dignity, and compassion. Through our half-term project,  our pupils  reflected on these qualities and expressed their learning creatively.

‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’ highlights the crucial role that black people have played in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities.

Each class was assigned one Black or Mixed Heritage person to research  and then create their own versions of their work using whichever form of media they wanted.

The iconic individuals were:

Beech Class:        Bob Marley

Chestnut Class:   Benjamin Zephaniah

Sycamore Class:  Katherine Johnson

Cedar Class:        Rosa Parks

Willow and Ash Class:    Martin Luther King

Oak and Acorn Class : Baroness Floella Benjamin.

The children’s work was showcased in a special Art Gallery Exhibition on Thursday 7th November it was amazing!

To further highlight our theme of inclusion and community, lots of our parents very kindly brought in  delicious dishes from their country of origin to share with everyone.  It was a beautiful event which highlighted how much we can achieve when children, parents and teachers unite with a common purpose.
